Traction
Did you know?
A horse can provide a maximum force of a value equal to its own weight (nearly a tonne) for 15 seconds.
Record: Two draught horses pulled a load of 131 tons of wood over 400m (23/2/1893, USA).
One horse power (HP) equals 35kg of force which is the average force developed by a horse 7 hours a day, 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
A few figures
19th century = three million draught horses in France
20th century = mechanisation, futurism, a fall in fuel prices, the policy of enlarging farms and a lack of research in the field of animal traction = coup de grace for animal energy (less than 110,000 draught horses in France in 2004).
Equipment
The rigid shoulder collar was a revolution, it is 30% more effective than the breast collar.
The lighter the horse in comparison to the load to be pulled, the more the use of the collar is recommended.
