Percheron

A little background...

In 1883, the Perche breeders founded the Société Hippique Percheronne de France (French Percheron Equestrian Society) and opened the breed studbook. According to history, the Percheron is an Arab horse which has grown over time due to the way it has been used. its origin is in fact local mares which were crossed with the Arab horses left in France by Arab warriors at the time of the conquests.

Standard and breeding area

There are two types of Percheron, whose coat is black or grey: the draught type and the coach type. The draught type measures 1.60 to 1.75m and can easily weigh a tonne. Its conformation is solid, it is a traction horse with very strong steps. The coach type is lighter in its morphology. It is often larger and lighter than its draught counterpart and is mainly used for driving. Percherons are found all over the world, particularly in the United States where it is raised by 3,000 breeders.

Today...

Whether for leisure, sport or work, the diversity of Percherons satisfies a whole range of enthusiasts. It is also highly prized in Japan, where it is used in traction races, and in the United States, where it takes part in huge shows. In France, nearly 2,600 mares were put forward for reproduction in 2004. The breed national final takes place at the famous Pin stud farm in Normandy at the end of September.
